Games are stuck on the same old material, Warren Spector has argued, and the industry needs individual role models to break free of action?s stranglehold on art.

In the first column of a monthly series on GamesIndustry, Spector said that the mainstream film world has produced a large number of role models ? actors who have transitioned from lighter fare to work with a social conscience, examining big issues and furthering the medium. Mainstream gaming, admittedly a much younger medium, doesn?t yet have these kinds of figures.

?I look around and, outside of a very few indie games and, of course, the self-styled and largely unheralded ?serious games? movement, I don?t see any mainstream developers or publishers offering this kind of serious fare. Ever,? he said.

?As a medium we remain mired in action and genre conventions. Even what passes for seriousness in mainstream gaming seems to require zombies, serial killers, aliens or demons to attract an audience. If I were to say I wanted to make a game about rescuing hostages in Iran ? without guns! ? assuming I could figure out how to make such a game, I?d get laughed out of the pitch meeting.?

Spector gave a few more examples of idea that simply wouldn?t be funded in today?s business environment, noting that core ideas are always made to serve war games of one kind or another.

?The breadth of content game developers are allowed to explore is stultifyingly narrow,? he said.

The designer gave a number of possible explanations for his observations, some of which he feels are either blatantly false or pretty poor excuses ? that he?s overlooking something; that games can?t do anything but violent action; that gaming is too young to have moved beyond spectacle; that games and gamers are inherently adolescent; that the business interests behind gaming are not keen on anything outside traditional action fare.

?Where, I wonder, are gaming?s grown-ups?? he concluded.

Spector is well known as one of the key members of Origin Systems, Looking Glass Studios and Ion Storm, playing an important role in the development of the Thief and especially Deus Ex properties. He later founded Junction Point, which produced two Epic Mickey games before closing last year. He is an outspoken opponent to the disproportionate representation of violence in games.

Used parachute on Mars flaps in the wind

Apr. 4, 2013 ? Photos from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show how the parachute that helped NASA's Curiosity rover land on Mars last summer has subsequently changed its shape on the ground.

The images were obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Seven images taken by HiRISE between Aug. 12, 2012, and Jan. 13, 2013, show the used parachute shifting its shape at least twice in response to wind.

The images in the sequence of photos are available online at http://uahirise.org/releases/msl-chute.php and at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages/details.php?id=PIA16813 .

Researchers have used HiRISE to study many types of changes on Mars. Its first image of Curiosity's parachute, not included in this series, caught the spacecraft suspended from the chute during descent through the Martian atmosphere.

HiRISE is operated by the University of Arizona, Tucson. The instrument was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project and Curiosity are managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

The possibilities for taking advantage of the upcoming license-free freshwater fishing day, Saturday, April 6, in Florida are almost endless. That?s because people of all ages can cast their lines into 3 million acres of lakes, ponds and reservoirs and 12,000 miles of fishable rivers, streams and canals.

The hardest part might be picking your destination.

These abundant resources, coupled with responsible freshwater fish management, are why Florida is known as the ?Fishing Capital of the World.?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) scheduled the first of four license-free recreational fishing days on this weekend because it coincides with a productive freshwater fishing period, when the weather is usually pleasant. Many of Florida?s recreational sport fishes, such as black bass, bluegill and redear sunfish, move into the shallows to spawn during spring, making them more available for anglers to catch.

Besides enjoying the fun of reeling in a fish, people find that recreational fishing is a good motivator to enjoy the great outdoors. In fact, fishing is a prime reason lots of folks get outside in the first place.

Fishing is a low-cost, wholesome form of entertainment, which is why the FWC offers four days when a recreational fishing license is not needed. The FWC also made Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, Sept. 1 license-free saltwater fishing days and set June 8 as the second license-free freshwater fishing day. These days coincide with a holiday weekend, National Fishing and Boating Week or open-harvest seasons for popular species such as bay scallops.

All other bag limit, season and size restrictions apply on these dates for recreational, not commercial, fishing.

So escape the hustle and bustle Saturday by telling everyone you?ve ?gone fishing.? But don?t forget to take your kids and spouse and friends to share the fun.

Philippines may allow U.S. greater military access: minister

MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines is ready to help the United States as it aligns its defenses against threatened attacks by North Korea, the foreign minister said, hinting at the possibility of opening more Philippine bases to the U.S. military.

U.S. forces have previously used military bases and civilian airports in the Philippines to repair and refuel aircraft and warships deployed in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The U.S. has ships in Subic, the former home of the U.S. 7th Fleet, and aircraft at the nearby Clark airfield, another former U.S. base on the main island of Luzon.

"I think as treaty allies, if there is an attack, we should help one another, which is what the treaty alliance is all about," Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario told journalists at a main army base in Manila on Friday.

Manila signed a Mutual Defence Treaty with Washington in 1951, one of the key links in the chain of security alliances the United States has with Asia-Pacific states, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Australia.

On Friday the two countries began a fortnight of scheduled joint military exercises known as Balikatan ('shoulder to shoulder') which come amid high tensions on the Korean peninsula and in the South China Sea, where the Philippines is embroiled in a long territorial dispute with China.

"Balikatan with its complex and comprehensive set of exercises is an important contribution not only in preparing both our armed forces to work together but also in building my country's own capacity to defend itself," del Rosario said.

About 8,000 American and Filipino soldiers are taking part in this year's exercises, staging mock battles and simulating disaster responses. Nearly a dozen Asian and Pacific states are also taking part in a drill that examines how to handle vessel collisions in a busy shipping lane such as the South China Sea.

Judge approves BofA $2.43 billion settlement over Merrill

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bank of America Corp on Friday won a federal judge's approval for a $2.43 billion settlement with investors who said the lender hid crucial information when it bought Merrill Lynch & Co.

The accord, among the largest investor settlements stemming from the recent global financial crisis, was approved by U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel in Manhattan.

Castel called the settlement "fair, reasonable and adequate," and said it culminated an "extraordinarily hard-fought litigation."

Bank of America had agreed to buy Merrill in an all-stock deal initially valued at $50 billion on September 15, 2008, the same day that Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc went bankrupt.

But Merrill ended up losing $15.84 billion in that year's fourth quarter, even as it awarded $3.62 billion of bonuses to employees. Bank of America ultimately obtained a federal bailout, since repaid, to absorb Merrill.

Shareholders including the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio and the Teachers Retirement System of Texas said Merrill's mounting losses and bonus plans should have been disclosed before investors voted on the merger in December 2008.

The accord with the second-largest U.S. bank was announced in September, and won preliminary court approval in December.

"We are very proud of this result," Max Berger, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said at the hearing.

Bank of America denied the plaintiffs' allegations, but Chief Executive Brian Moynihan has said the settlement would remove uncertainty for the Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank.

Daniel Kramer, a lawyer for the bank, declined to comment at the hearing. A spokeswoman, Jessica Oppenheim, did not immediately respond to requests for comment after the hearing.

Since buying mortgage lender Countrywide Financial Corp in July 2008 and Merrill six months later, Bank of America has incurred more than $40 billion of extra costs for litigation, write downs and mortgage buybacks, analysts have said.

The company still faces a variety of litigation over its mortgage operations, which have shrunk significantly in size, and over its underwriting of mortgage securities.

Bank of America is among 17 banks and lenders facing lawsuits by the Federal Housing Finance Agency over losses suffered by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on mortgage securities.

The FHFA has sued Bank of America over $57.5 billion of securities, more than any other bank, that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bought, and which were sponsored or underwritten by Bank of America, Countrywide or Merrill.

Bank of America shares closed up 3 cents at $11.97 on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday.

Castel also awarded three law firms representing the plaintiffs about $160.5 million, including $152.4 million in fees.

"The lawyers did a very fine job of keeping their eye on the job," he said.
