NOVA's Earth From Space documentary shows a super-connected planet (video)

NOVA's Earth From Space documentary shows us our connected planet from above video

We've already had a meteorite shower to remind us that Earth is just a small part of a much, much larger universe. If that wasn't enough perspective for you, PBS is offering a follow-up through NOVA's newly streaming "Earth From Space" documentary. The two-hour show illustrates how our planet's individual climates and ecosystems are really part of one larger unit, with ripple effects that we didn't always anticipate until an abundance of earth observation satellites made them clear. You'll have to be an American to watch before the documentary, at least before it arrives in disc form on April 2nd. Every Earth citizen can still watch the trailer after the break.

Keeping companies safe as IT threats soar | IT-Online

News of new forms of insidious cyber-attacks, viruses and malware emerges almost daily ? making it seem as if a so-called ?cybergeddon? is imminent ? yet many companies still do not have adequate infrastructure to protect themselves against these online onslaughts.
Is it simply a matter of company owners becoming desensitised due to being inundated? Or do they regard every new warning with a dose of scepticism, thinking that it is merely scare tactics being employed by security companies to sell their software and services? Is there truly a reason to be concerned?
According to Lutz Blaeser, MD at?Intact Security, there is indeed.
?It is definitely not fear-mongering. Statistics show that there has been a rapid rise in attacks this year, with the nature of the attacks getting especially bad in the last two months. The focus of the attackers is also shifting, with the functions of malware smuggled onto company computers changing and now increasingly being used for corporate espionage, to spy on company networks.?

The purpose of this is to collect information about the company infrastructure and use it during targeted attacks to steal sensitive company information and customer data. Research conducted by the South African Cyber Threat Barometer and published in the organisation?s 2012/13 report, reveals that South Africa lost R2,65-billion to cybercrime between January 2011 and August 2012.

Blaeser says the bring your own device (BYOD) culture, in which smartphones and tablets are simultaneously used for both business and personal matters, are also to blame for weakening the boundaries of company networks. However, there are ways to strengthen it, he points out.
?An exact analysis of the IT infrastructure and threats to the sensitive data of a company is the basis for planning adequate protective measures. Virus protection and firewalls are standard components, which most companies use.
?Sensitive information, such as the credit card information of customers, electronic personnel files, contracts as well as research and development results, might require additional protective measures.?

Those measures, says Blaeser, include having restricted access to data and using encryption technology.
?Companies should also introduce clearly stipulated and binding IT guidelines, in which they define how employees are allowed to use the Internet and private devices at and for work purposes.?

He adds that a security product like any of those in the G Data range is a good starting point for companies to keep their valuable information secure.
The G Data products include two powerful scanning engines, a firewall, spam filters, Web protection, application and parental controls, as well as device management tools. All of these features ensure that a business of any size is fully covered from the multitude of threats directed at them on a daily basis.

In addition to all-round virus, spam and phishing protection, G Data?s DoubleScan technology ensures the best virus detection rates and boasts state-of-the-art methods for detecting unknown viruses.
All business products boast application control and device management, allowing business owners to control the use of external devices on their network. All of this comes in one package that is highly configurable and at a very competitive price.

Blaeser points out that companies ? especially small to medium enterprises (SMEs) ? could enjoy many benefits if they decided to switch to external service providers, such as those provided by managed security service (MSS) and security as a service, in which SMEs can rent security solutions and delegate complex security problems or questions to experts.
?Companies enjoy many advantages when they use external service providers, including lower costs, flexibility and a high availability of specialists.?

Funeral held for NYC woman killed in Turkey

NEW YORK (AP) ? As the family and friends of Sarai Sierra were saying farewell on Friday to the 33-year-old New York City woman killed while on a solo vacation in Turkey, investigators there detained the siblings of a man wanted for questioning over her death.

Turkey's state-run news agency said police briefly took the two brothers and a sister of the possible suspect into custody in the northern city of Karabuk. They were released after being questioned about their brother's whereabouts. The Anadolu agency said their DNA samples were taken.

Police in Karabuk refused to comment. Turkish news reports say police want to question a scrap paper collector who used to hang around Istanbul's ancient city walls, where Sierra's body was found on Feb. 2, 12 days after she disappeared. Authorities say she sustained a fatal blow to the head.

Sierra had traveled to Turkey to explore her photography hobby. She went alone after a friend who was supposed to join her canceled for financial reasons.

That friend was among about 200 mourners who attended Sierra's funeral at Christian Pentecostal Church on Staten Island Friday morning.

In a service that featured several personal tributes, her husband, siblings and friends made clear they found solace in their faith.

"My mind is at peace," said her husband, Steven Diaz-Sierra.

"I have many questions for the Lord," he said, "but despite how tragically this came about, I know in my heart that my wife is in his presence."

Sierra was a member of the church's congregation since she was a child, and was married there in 1998.

"Whatever the circumstances of her death, she's with God," and that belief provides comfort, said the Rev. John Rocco Carlo. The pastor said it was one of the most difficult funerals he performed in his two decades at the church, because he had watched Sierra grow up.

"It's not goodbye," said her brother, David Jimenez. "We'll see her again someday. Christ promised us that."

Still, while they spoke positively of their beliefs, the tributes also acknowledged the heartbreaking loss.

"There will always be that missing space in my life, and that missing piece is you," said her sister, Christina Jimenez, as she struggled to hold back tears. "Nothing is the same now, and I doubt that will ever change."

Speaking directly to Sierra's sons ? Silas, 9, and Sion, 11 ? Carlo said: "As we grow older, we become our parents. We look like them, we act like them. We talk and walk like them.

"So when you miss your mom, look in the mirror. She's part of you."

Following the service, Sierra was buried in a cemetery steps away from the apartment building where she lived with her husband and children.

New Mexico Senate Cancels LGBT Recognition Day

Republican Senator Bill Sharer halted a day recognizing the LGBT community of Santa Fe.

Senator Bill Sharer

Plans for an LGBT Recognition Day in the New Mexico State Senate on Wednesday were thwarted after Republicans voiced their apprehension to it, and then threatened to shut down that day's session. Senator Bill Sharer said he would fillibuster if the LGBT Recognition Day were to proceed, according to Progress Now New Mexico.

To appease the Republicans, the Senate instead drafted a non-binding certificate honoring the LGBT community of Sante Fe. The certificate does not present the same recognition for other groups honored by the State Senate. Previous Recognition Days have been established for people who eat corn, others who ride trains, and people who live in Azerbaijan, according to Progress Now New Mexico, which is now circulating a petition urging Sharer to allow the Recognition Day of LGBT citizens.

Twitter: brands need to use humour to connect with consumers

Printer

Print

Posted 14 February 2013 09:43am by David Moth with 1 comment

Everyone who uses Twitter, which is presumably 90% of the people reading this, no doubt follows at least one or two comedians or spoof accounts that are there purely for entertainment value.?

And it?s this comic element that Twitter?s UK director Bruce Daisley believes brands need to tap into to develop more meaningful conversations with their customers.

At Bite?s Empty13 event, Daisley light-heartedly suggested that the UK is unique in that its citizens love to find humour in the darker side of life ? so while we all enjoyed the highs of 2012 such as the Jubilee and the Olympics, we also love to revel in the troughs that lie in between.?

He gave the example of two of the most retweeted posts of recent memory. The one that captured the American public?s imagination most was Barack Obama?s touching image celebrating his re-election.

Whereas in the UK we loved David Whitehouse?s sarcastic comment about cycling cheat Lance Armstrong. It has subsequently been retweeted more than 10,000 times.

But for most brands, it probably wouldn?t pay off if they were constantly trying to entertain ? though there are some notable exceptions in the form of Arena Flowers and Betfair Poker.

Instead, Daisley suggests that the approach should be to blend one part humour with three parts seriousness.

The challenge for any brand is thinking about how they can establish a friendly relationship with people. They need to provide value and substance but with a human tone.

This is a tightrope skilfully walked by the likes of ASOS and Tesco, which we recently analysed in a look at how the top five UK retailers use Twitter.

O2 also hits the right balance, deftly dealing with customer queries and complaints with a mixture of politeness and humour.

Specsavers is another great example of a brand that has used humour in its marketing, as well as taking advantage of Twitter to react in real time to the day?s events.

Back in January Chelsea footballer Eden Hazard was banned after kicking a ballboy at the side of the pitch.

Specsavers immediately responded with this advert, which has gained more than 3,000 retweets and is still pinned to the top of its Twitter feed.

Daisley?s final example was a funny riposte from the Lib Dem press office in response to an attempted jibe from the Labour press team.

It shows that impact that humour can have in bringing a more rounded, human image to an otherwise dry Twitter feed.

Gov. Scott Walker proposes money for cancer center

GREEN BAY - Cancer research in Wisconsin could soon see a boost in funding from the state.

Governor Walker made the announcement in Green Bay Thursday as part of his budget proposal.

"I had breast cancer in 2005," said Judy Porter of Sturgeon Bay.

At that time, Porter became part of a clinical trial at St. Vincent Hospital's Regional Cancer Center.

"Because it helps to provide research for gaining new knowledge as to how to treat cancer," Porter said.

As part of the Wisconsin Oncology Network, St. Vincent has access to the UW Carbone Cancer Center's innovative clinical trials.

"We're thrilled to make this announcement," said Gov. Scott Walker.

Thursday, Governor Walker visited St. Vincent Hospital to announce plans to expand cancer research in the state.

"As part of our budget, we're including $3.75 million as part of a match to leverage money not only through the public sector, but to leverage money from the private sector," Walker said.

The funding would be used to make the state of the art imaging technology developed by the Carbone Center available to other hospitals in the network.

"To expand the technology that's already available and expand the cutting edge research that's going to help us find more cures and more ways of providing great cancer care," said Walker.

The expansion of the Wisconsin Oncology Network of Imaging Excellence means the St. Vincent Cancer Center will soon be eligible to participate in innovative new studies to advance cancer research.

For now it's just a proposal, but oncologists say the expansion would help diagnose and assess cancer more accurately, and determine effective and personalized cancer treatments.

"It's something that we as clinicians rely on quite a bit to have these imaging procedures and when people have these, it helps us diagnose them, possibly earlier or tells us that we need to switch therapies," said Dr. Jules Blank with Green Bay Oncology.

Governor Walker says the time is now to make this investment.

"More than one person every hour dies from cancer in the state of Wisconsin," said Walker.

But until he unveils his budget plan and the Legislature approves it, this isn't a done deal.

Democratic State Senator, Dave Hansen says the proposed funding is a positive step forward.

However, he says health care took a hit this week when Governor Walker refused millions of federal dollars to expand Medicaid.

"I'm happy to see the $3.75 million coming for cancer research because it's so important...but it is sad that the university's been cut, the tech schools have been cut, and now he turned his back on money that would have made a lot of difference for a lot of people in our state," Hansen told FOX 11 by phone.

The Governor's office says the funding can only happen, if the Department of Administration approves a plan for a fundraising match.

Walker will unveil his full budget next Wednesday.

Attempted arson reported at ES church

State Police say they are investigating an attempted arson at an Eastern Shore church.

According to Corinne Geller with Virginia State Police, troopers were sent to the 21,000 block of Deep Creek Road in Onancock Wednesday afternoon.

Geller said based on evidence found at Leatherbury?United Methodist Church, an individual or a group of individuals attempted to set fire to the building between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon.

Church member Joe Morgan said there was noticeable damage.

"It looks minimal but at the same time, repairs are not cheap anymore," Morgan said. "It's going to take quite a bit to repair it."

Police have yet to confirm whether this attempted fire is the work of a serial arsonist(s) responsible for 48 arson cases reported on the Eastern Shore since mid-November 2012.

The Accomack County Sheriff's Office has increased the monetary reward to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for those fires. Initially, the reward was set at $5,000.

This DIY Brake Light Backpack Warns Cars and Other Bikers When You?re Slowing Down or Turning

This DIY Brake Light Backpack Warns Cars and Other Bikers When You’re Slowing Down or TurningThis DIY Brake Light Backpack Warns Cars and Other Bikers When You’re Slowing Down or Turning When you're biking or riding a motorcycle, proper signaling to the people around you is essential to making sure that they?and you?get home safely. We've shown you some bike signaling projects before, but this DIY brake light backpack is a little easier to build, and warns everyone around you when you're slowing down or about to turn, and is bright enough for use by cyclists or people riding a motorcycle or scooter.

The video above from the fine folks at Adafruit Industries walks you through the process from start to finish, but hit the link below for the the full guide if you're interested in making one for yourself. You'll need a FLORA accelerometer, a battery pack, a wireless module to control the lights, and the LEDS to make this project work (all of the parts are available at the project page, if you're interested.) Once you have all the gear, assembling everything will take some soldering skills and a steady hand, but it's a great project, even if you're just getting started with DIY electronics projects.

The FLORA accelerometer automatically senses when you're braking and will activate your brake lights as you're slowing down. Then, the wireless module lets you toggle the left or right signals whenever you're getting ready to turn. The LEDs are bright and easily seen at night, which is perfect for cycling or motoring around town at night.

Firmer yen boosts Korean shares, underpins Asia stocks

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares outside of Japan rose on Wednesday, led by South Korean exporters as the yen firmed amid conflicting interpretations of G7 comments about the currency's recent weakness.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> gained 0.9 percent.

Seoul shares <.ks11> outperformed with a 1.5 percent jump while Australian shares jumped 0.9 percent after record first-half earnings from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia boosted sentiment.

The Nikkei stock average <.n225> slumped 1.1 percent as the firming yen prompted investors to take profits on exporters. <.t/>

China, Taiwan and Hong Kong markets remain closed for the Lunar New Year holiday.

European markets will be mixed, with financial spreadbetters predicting London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> would open between a 0.1 percent fall and a 0.4 percent gain. U.S. stock futures were up 0.1 percent to suggest a somewhat firmer Wall Street open. <.l><.eu><.n/>

Investors continued to seek cues from currency markets before a meeting of the Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers in Moscow on Friday and Saturday, with growing international tensions over exchange rates.

At the center of the debate is Japan, where Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government has made it clear that it will push for aggressive policies to beat stubborn deflation through drastic monetary expansion. Anticipation of much bolder Bank of Japan monetary policy has sent the yen into a steady decline, helping boost Japanese stocks to 33-month highs.

"The Japanese stock market may have rallied too strongly on expectations alone. I don't believe the Japanese government is manipulating currency rates, but it is maybe time that an equilibrium point may be sought for the yen's level given that some other countries may see weaker currencies as beneficial to their economies," said Yuuki Sakurai, CEO at Fukoku Capital Management in Tokyo.

The yen's respite from heavy selling eased concerns for investors in South Korea.

"The main board's rebound was driven by a break in the yen's weakness, following signs that the won's strength has abated somewhat," said Lim Dong-rak, an analyst at Hanyang Securities in Seoul.

The yen rallied on Tuesday, reversing the previous day's late selloff against the dollar and euro, after an official with the Group of Seven said it is worried about excess moves in the Japanese currency.

G7 governors and ministers reaffirmed their commitment that fiscal and monetary policies would not be directed at devaluing currencies, a statement meant to reassure investors that Tokyo was not aiming to guide the yen lower with its aggressive expansion of monetary policy.

"All these comments are merely stating the obvious and are not to be taken in the context of whether they are endorsing a weaker yen or not," said Yuji Saito, director of foreign exchange at Credit Agricole in Tokyo.

"What is being said is that monetary policy should be used to achieve domestic objectives and Japan is undertaking reflationary policies, not manipulating currency rates, and the result of that is a weak yen. What is asked for from Japan is to explain its policy clearly at the G20," Saito said.

The dollar dropped 0.6 percent to 92.95 yen after marking its highest level since May 2010 of 94.465 on Monday. The euro tumbled 0.6 percent to 125.01 yen, moving further away from its highest since April 2010 of 127.71 yen touched last week.

The BOJ ends a two-day policy meeting on Thursday, with markets expecting no fresh easing steps this time. But expectations are running high that further unprecedented measures will be taken under a new BOJ regime due to start next month after the terms of current top officials end.

"So far, the yen has been weakening on expectations for a bold monetary policy, and from now, Japan has to implement actual policy to justify such expectations," said Naohiko Baba, Japan chief economist at Goldman Sachs.

The euro steadied around $1.3450, keeping overnight gains made after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said talk of a currency war was overdone, and that Spain was on the right track toward economic recovery.

In his annual State of the Union address, U.S. President Barack Obama proposed on Tuesday to hike the minimum wage by more than 20 percent, invest $50 billion on crumbling roads and bridges and spend $15 billion on a construction jobs program in a bid to boost economic growth.

U.S. crude was up 0.1 percent to $97.60 a barrel and Brent was steady around $118.61.

Palladium extended gains to a 17-month high as supply concerns sparked speculative buying, while gold edged up on demand from jewellers.

Prince Fielder, Detroit Tiger, Unveils 'World's Largest Baseball Card' At Spring Training

LAKELAND, Fla. -- With his beefy frame and prodigious power, Prince Fielder doesn't look like a player who can simply blend into a lineup.

Somehow, the slugging first baseman did just that in his first season with the Detroit Tigers.

Fielder signed a $214 million deal early last year, arriving in Motown amid predictable fanfare. Then he hit .313 with 30 home runs and 108 RBIs in a Detroit debut that was largely devoid of drama.

With Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera hitting in front of him and Justin Verlander baffling hitters from the mound, Fielder's terrific production was almost overshadowed. And that's exactly how he prefers it.

"It's always good to be on a team when you have superstars who are cool guys. They know how to play the game," Fielder said. "Everyone here is a star, so it's not a big deal. I love that. The more attention off me, the better."

Detroit's pitchers and catchers went through their first spring training workout Tuesday, but the full squad doesn't start until later this week. Fielder appeared at a youth baseball field in Lakeland on Tuesday, joining around 100 youngsters for the unveiling of what was billed as the world's largest baseball card.

The card, created by the Topps Company, measured approximately 90 feet by 60 feet, leaving center field covered with the giant image of Fielder swinging.

That's about as ostentatious as it gets for Fielder these days. His violent, uppercut swing is in direct contrast with his persona. His goal each season is to be consistent and avoid major peaks and valleys.

That attitude may have rubbed off on the Tigers, who were a disappointment for much of 2012 but never panicked. They rallied late in the season to win both the AL Central and the American League pennant.

"I think it helped the team," said Don Kelly, an outfielder on last year's team. "He was pretty steady the whole time. He never got too high or too low. Just kind of stayed the same guy every day."

Perhaps that's why Fielder seemed so comfortable from the start. Some high-profile free agents might try too hard to have a big season after switching teams. Others might need time to adjust to new surroundings or opponents.

Fielder made the transition from the NL's Milwaukee Brewers look easy. His focus was on being the same hitter he's always been ? nothing more, nothing less.

"They brought you over here because of what you do, not what they want to see you do better," Fielder told The Associated Press in an interview at the baseball card event. "My thing is just staying consistent and being healthy, because when you're healthy, that gives you the best chance to be consistent because you're on the field."

The 28-year-old Fielder has eight years left on his contract with Detroit, so his durability will be important. He played 162 games last season ? the third time in four years he reached that mark.

Ever since he became a big league regular, Fielder has been loath to miss time if he's healthy enough to play.

"It just feels like I left the iron on," he said. "For me, it's a weird feeling, and I don't like that feeling."

Cabrera won the MVP last year, and Verlander nearly took his second straight Cy Young Award. Fielder teamed up with those two to lead the Tigers to the World Series.

Once there, he went 1 for 14 ? but he wasn't the only Tiger who struggled. Detroit was shut out twice, had the third-lowest batting average in Series history at .159 and was swept by San Francisco.

"To lose the World Series, you've got to get there," Fielder said. "Disappointed by the loss, but we still achieved something great."

Hoping for their first title since 1984, the have added outfielder Torii Hunter. Designated hitter Victor Martinez is back after missing the whole 2012 season with a knee injury.

That means Fielder still shouldn't have to do anything special. If he's his usual self with the bat, the Tigers can score plenty.

"I thought he made a great transition last year ? to come over here with all the expectations and everything," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "I think he might be even more comfortable this year."

Notes: Leyland stated the obvious before the workout, announcing Verlander as his opening day starter. ... Leyland also said he's not going to spend too much time harping on the competition for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation. RHP Rick Porcello and LHP Drew Smyly are vying for that role. "I'm not going to give a day-by-day running of the Porcello-Smyly situation," Leyland said. The same holds true for prospect Bruce Rondon's attempt to become the team's closer. "I think the best way to deal with all these things is to just wait and see and let it play out," Leyland said.

Russian arms trader: Syria shipments will continue

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia will continue supplying weapons to Syrian President Bashar Assad's government despite the country's escalating civil war, the head of Russia's state arms trader said Wednesday.

Anatoly Isaikin, the director of Rosoboronexport, said that Russia sees no need to stop arms trade with Syria as it isn't prohibited by the United Nations. He dismissed Western criticism of Russian arms sales to Assad's regime, saying that his company has only delivered defensive weapons.

"In the absence of sanctions, we are continuing to fulfill our contract obligations," Isaikin said at a news conference. "But these aren't offensive weapons. We are mostly shipping air defense systems and repair equipment intended for various branches of the military."

Moscow has been the main protector of Assad's beleaguered regime, joining with China at the U.N. Security Council to block attempts to impose sanctions over his crackdown on a 23-month-old uprising in which more than 60,000 have died.

For more than four decades, Syria has been Moscow's top ally in the region and has received billions of dollars' worth of missiles, combat jets, tanks, artillery and other military gear. It's the last Kremlin ally in the Middle East and hosts the only naval base Russia has outside the former Soviet Union.

As the rebel offensive against Assad has intensified, the Kremlin has sought to distance itself from Assad, signaling that it is resigned to him eventually losing power. But Moscow has continued to oppose sanctions against Damascus and warned that the fall of Assad's regime could plunge Syria even deeper into violence and also encourage the rise of extremist groups across the region.

Alexei Pushkov, the Kremlin-connected head of foreign affairs committee in the lower house of the Russian parliament, said Wednesday that Assad's downfall would create a "second Afghanistan" and reaffirmed that Russia would continue to reject the calls for the Syrian ruler's resignation as a precondition for peace talks.

Russia has bristled at Western demands to stop providing Assad with arms, arguing that its weapons trade with Damascus doesn't contradict international law. In June, a Russian-operated ship carrying helicopter gunships and air defense missiles was forced to turn back to Russia after its British insurer canceled coverage for the vessel.

Russia said the vessel was carrying three refurbished helicopters belonging to Syria, and criticized Britain for forcing the ship to turn back, saying that it wouldn't abide by European sanctions against the Assad regime.

The helicopters were repaired and sent back to Syria by a different Russian firm, and Isaikin insisted that his company hasn't shipped any combat planes or helicopters to Syria.

He said more deliveries will be conducted under existing contracts, but refused to give specifics.

Isaikin said that his company has a contract with Syria for the delivery of Yak-130 combat jets but so far has not shipped any. He didn't explain why no deliveries have been made, but the reason could be the aircraft's long production cycle.

Russian media reported last year that the contract was for 36 Yak-130s worth $550 million. The Yak-130 is a combat training jet that can also carry modern weapons for ground attack missions.

Isaikin didn't mention any other weapons systems which his company has delivered to Syria or is planning to ship in the future.

The Russian media said they included Pantsyr-S1 and Buk-M2 air defense systems and Bastion anti-ship missile system. The latter is armed with supersonic Yakhont cruise missiles that have a range of up to 300 kilometers (162 nautical miles) and provides a strong deterrent against an attack from the sea.

Long memories in brain activity explain streaks in individual behavior

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Even with a constant task, human performance fluctuates in time-scales from seconds to minutes in a fractal manner. In a recent study a Finnish research group found that the individual variability in the brain dynamics as indexed by the neuronal scaling laws predicted the individual behavioral variability and the conscious detection of very weak sensory stimuli. These data indicate that individual neuronal dynamics underlie the individual variability in human cognition and performance. Results may also have a strong impact in understanding the neuronal mechanism of neuropsychiatric diseases in which behavioral dynamics are abnormal.

Human performance in cognitive tasks varies from moment-to-moment so that the similar behavioral performance is clustered into streaks. The neuronal dynamics underlying this behavioral variability has remained unknown.

Similar scale-free and power-law distributed? ?avalanche dynamics? is observed in many natural systems such as sand piles, earthquakes, gene regulation, and also brain activity. However, the functional significance of the neuronal scale-free behavior has remained unknown. It is also unclear whether it is just epiphenomena without any further significance.?

"We investigated whether the individual variability in the scaling-laws governing the detection of auditory and visual stimuli presented in the threshold of detection could be predicted by the variability in the neuronal scaling laws, explains Matias Palva," project leader in the Neuroscience Center of the University of Helsinki, Finland.

The researchers used magneto- and electroencephalography to record non-invasively human brain activity during the task performance. They found that both the behavioral and neuronal dynamics were characterized by scale-free dynamics. Individual variability in the neuronal scaling laws predicted the individual scaling laws in behavioral performance.

"These results suggest that the individual behavioral and psychophysical variability in task performance is largely a result of the inherent variability in the individual neuronal dynamics," says project leader Satu Palva.

The whopper of a storm didn't rank high in history

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The snowstorm that walloped the Northeast with about 3 feet in some places didn't add up to being that bad, federal statistics say.

Two National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration storm-rating measurements initially ranked Friday's snowstorm as 16th in Northeast history by one scale and 25th by another.

The two storm measurement systems are similar in scale to the ones that measure hurricanes and tornadoes. They rank the weekend storm as a 3 and "major" on a 1 to 5 scale. It didn't rate a "crippling" 4 or "extreme" 5.

"I was a bit surprised; I thought it would have been a 4 or a 5," said National Climatic Data Center meteorologist Mike Squires. "The footprint of really heavy snow over populated areas was relatively small compared to other storms we have looked at."

Meteorologists look at the really big snow ? measuring more than 30 inches ? and only 192 square miles populated by 49,000 people got that much. To be crippling or extreme, those numbers have to be much higher, Squires said. Only eight weather stations out of 1,365 had 30 inches of snow, he said.

The snowstorm measuring systems take into account the size of the snowstorm, the amount of snow and how many people were in its path. But they do not take into account high winds ? some in this storm reached hurricane force ? or drifting snow.

On the older and more nationally oriented Northeast Snow Impact Scale, which looks at snow in the entire history of a storm, the weekend storm's total score was 4.35, ranking it 25th. That's far behind the No. 1 1993 Storm of the Century and the more famous 1978 blizzard that ranked 13th.

In the newer and more area-specific Regional Snowfall Index, this recent storm came in behind the No. 1 storm in 1969 and ranked a more respectable 16th with a 9.04 total score.

Some other statistics show more severe weather: Worcester, Mass., had eight hours of blizzard conditions, with seven other cities having official blizzard conditions for three or more hours.

On Saturday in Boston, 14.8 inches of snow fell in one day, breaking the record from 1994. Portland, Maine, got a record 31.9 inches of snow, smashing the old record by nearly 5 inches. Snow records were also set in Bridgeport and Hartford, Conn.

There is a still-to-be-resolved question about the quality of snowfall data in Portland, and most of the nearby stations aren't over 30 inches, Squires said.

Hirono: Military cuts could affect Hawaii tourism

Tina Yuen PBN

U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono says budget cuts to defense spending could affect Hawaii tourism.

Drastic budget cuts that could go into effect March 1 would not only mean a reduction in defense spending in Hawaii, but it could also impact tourism, U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono said Monday.

If Congress doesn?t approve a plan to slash spending by March 1, the cuts would mean thousands of Department of Defense civilian employees being furloughed as well as Federal Aviation Administration air traffic controllers being laid off, which could impact tourism in Hawaii, she said.

?Clearly, this is not the way to go,? Hirono said during a conference call with Hawaii media.

According to U.S. Pacific Command, there are 19,000 DOD civilian employees in Hawaii. PACOM could not comment about the impact on any cuts here, but military officials said they are awaiting directions from the Pentagon if the cuts do happen.

Hirono said thousands of jobs would also be lost, including 2,200 in the health-care industry.

If a deal isn?t reached, the more than $2 billion in defense contracts here in Hawaii could be cut by 10 percent and contracts may have to be restructured, Hirono said.

?It?s really poor business. It?s poor budgeting,? she added. ?We are working very hard on the Senate side to come up with an alternative that would prevent [the reductions].?

In addition to reducing spending, the government needs to look at ways to generate more revenues and create more jobs, she added.

Mark Zuckerberg, Paul Allen, Young Tech Elite Top List Of 2012 Donors

If the word "philanthropy" conjures up solely images of stodgy foundations and out-of-touch donors, it may be time to clear your cache.

At the top of The Chronicle of Philanthropy's list of major donors in 2012, three of the top givers hail from the world of tech, and three couples are under 40.

?We?ve just never seen this in philanthropy,? Chronicle editor Stacy Palmer, told Forbes. ?Usually we have pictures of old white men on the top of the list.?

The top 50 donors on the list pledged a total of $7.4 billion, with a median gift of $49.6 million.

This is down from 2011's $10.4 billion, which included one large bequest. Without it, giving totaled $4.4 billion in 2011, the Chronicle reported.

Most of the donations this past year went to large institutions, higher education, arts and culture, hospitals, and private foundations.

Some of the largest reasons for giving were local community needs, concerns about budget cuts and donors seeking to fill the gaps, as wells as increasing college tuition price tags.

Warren Buffett, the No. 1 donor, gave $3.1 billion to his three children's foundations. Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were the second largest givers, pledging $498.8 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, according to the Chronicle.

Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, gave to the Allen Institute for Brain Science, among others. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his wife, Anne Wojcicki Brin, gave to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, as well as other recipients.

Silicon Valley tech titans have been credited with bolstering charity in 2012 through their "uber gifts," Rob Mitchell, CEO of the Atlas of Giving, told the Huffington Post in January.

The top names in tech gave $1.4 billion to charity in 2012, according to a Wall Street Journal study by Equilar. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and Google co-founder Sergey Brin topped the list. All three were among eight of the top 10 Silicon Valley-related donors who increased their stock giving from 2011 to 2012.

This trend may characterize a Silicon Valley philanthropy "reboot," meaning tech titans are becoming known for both giving and earning. Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen, founder of a social venture fund SV2, explained to the New York Times:

?The word ?philanthropy? brings up an image of somebody who?s had an illustrious career, has retired and is giving to highly established institutions that may or may not have ivy growing up their walls,? she said. ?I personally have felt the need to give philanthropy a reboot.?

Bill Gates and Mayor Michael Bloomberg were not listed on the Philanthropy 50 because the list does not count payments on past pledges or foundation grants, the Chronicle explained. Gates contributed millions to pay of his pledge and Bloomberg's donations included foundation grants which excluded them from the list.

Charitable giving in 2013 is slated to increase only 1.6 percent compared with last year, according to the Atlas of Giving, with issues such as the environment forecasted to receive more attention.

NBA Slam Dunk Contest 2013: Highlighting Best Dunk from Each Competitor

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest is usually the most anticipated event of All-Star Weekend. With this roster of competitors, this year will be no different.

Saturday's event features two former winners (Gerald Green and Jeremy Evans) and a veteran who has made his impression on similar competitions around the world (James White).

In addition, a trio of young players (Terrence Ross, Eric Bledsoe and Kenneth Faried) will look to become household names with a big performance.

While the top athletes in the world always find a way to surprise when the lights are on, we can look at the past to see what to expect. Fortunately, those expectations should be high because these six players have already shown they can throw down some serious dunks.

Here are the best individual dunks from each competitor in the 2013 Slam Dunk Contest.

(AP) ? "Identity Thief" has turned out to be the real thing at the North American box office.

The comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy debuted at No. 1 with a $36.6 million opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"Identity Thief" opened solidly despite the winter storm that buried much of the U.S. Northeast. Distributor Universal Pictures estimates the storm might have choked off as much as 10 percent of the movie's business.

"It took such a chunk out of the business this weekend. But we can't control Mother Nature," said Nikki Rocco, Universal's head of distribution. "We probably could have hit $40 million if it weren't for the weather this weekend."

The previous weekend's top movie, the zombie romance "Warm Bodies," fell to No. 2 with $11.5 million. That raises its domestic total to $36.7 million.

The weekend's other new wide release, Steven Soderbergh's thriller "Side Effects," had a modest opening of $10 million, coming in at No. 3.

Tom Cruise's 1986 hit "Top Gun" took flight again in theaters with a 3-D reissue that pulled in $1.9 million in narrow release of 300 theaters. The movie has a short run on the big-screen leading up to its Feb. 19 3-D release on DVD and Blu-ray.

Overall domestic revenues were down sharply from a year ago, when four movies had big openings ? "The Vow," ''Safe House," ''Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" and a 3-D reissue of "Star Wars: Episode I ? The Phantom Menace."

Receipts totaled $105 million, down 45 percent from the same weekend last year ? which was the only non-holiday weekend to have four movies open with more than $20 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

"The same weekend a year ago was such a tremendous weekend," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "It's really tough to live up to a weekend like we had last year. It was sort of a foregone conclusion that this was going to be a down weekend."

"Identity Thief" came in above industry expectations despite the storm and poor reviews for the comedy, which stars Bateman as a man chasing down a con artist (McCarthy) who has racked up thousands of dollars of charges in his name.

The combination of the actors and the premise made it a review-proof comedy, Rocco said.

"I think people just want to be entertained," Rocco said. "The chemistry between Jason and Melissa is the reason why this picture is doing so well."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
